Sale involves 90 F16 fighter jets.
Over the next ten years, Taiwan will purchase 90 F16 fighter jets from the U.S. under a $62 billion weapons deal announced Tuesday.
The United States has been Taiwan’s largest supplier of military weapons and the new deal represents one of the largest in that nation’s history. Lockheed Martin will produce the new generation jets. Taiwan last purchased a fleet of F16s in 1992. The new version has greater capability than those from 1992, namely the addition of state-of-the-art radar systems that allow for guided missile strikes at longer distances.
